So, Orkut is very popular in India. Orkut used to be “invitation based” social network service for long time. Recently when gmail became free (no invitation required) , Orkut also became free to register type social networking site.
People from India love Orkut for numerous reasons:
- Orkut is very popular in India.
- It is probably become a fashion trend to young generation to have an Orkut Id.
- Orkut helped many to find old friends.
- Orkut gives you ability to create as many communities as you want.
- Orkut also got 1000s of popular communities you can join.
- Orkut scrap book is easy to use.
- Orkut users can be tracked online/offline using google talk.
- Orkut has photogallery (up to 12 pictures directly storable to orkut server. Orkut recently offering more picture sharing through Flicker!)
- Orkut recently added MY VIDEOS to the profile (you can add your favorite videos from youtube, google etc)
- Orkut also added RSS feature!!Many of the orkut users are not yet aware of this feature as I hardly found anybody using it. RSS is a great feature that can be seamlessly integrated to your orkut profile if you have a blog/ website with RSS syndication!
Now, the troble part in orkut!
- Your scrapbook is open to all! If you think you will understand that it means a public display of your personal messages/emails to public.
- Huge misuse of pictures from various profiles. Many of my friends reported abuse with their orkut accounts.
- Somewhat slow orkut server! if you are orkut user you are probably aware of the problem.
- Risk to leaking sensitive documents!! (I found people scan their passports and put it in their Orkut profile)
- AFFAIRS!!!!!–sadly this leads to the story of the day!
THE STORY OF THE DAY!
Manish Thakur came to know Kaushambi Layek from Orkut Network. They started an affair! The affair went deep and Thakur proposed Layek for marriage. Layek refused. Manish shot her with gun as he could not take denial from dear Layek!
“I shot her. I lost everything by losing her. Without her, my life has no meaning. I could not digest her decision to marry somebody else,”-Manish Thakur!
Manish Thakur was actually married to Neetu. Manis told her wife to go back to Calcutta as he was having trouble with their married life. Neetu actually complained to the Indian Navy (employer of Manish) multiple times that Manish has been cheating on her.
Orkut profile of Manish is now full with profanity against him! Police scrutinized the account too.
Bottomline: Social Networking is good. But don’t make it too personal.
