St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kolkata
St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kolkata, India, is one of the most beautiful buildings in Kolkata. The white and huge building is right next to Birla Planetarium. Rabindra Sadan Complex and the Art Gallery is just few minutes walk on the same side of the road. Victoria Memorial is right across from the church. Its building was initiated by Bishop Wilson in 1839 and was completed in 1847, in Gothic style with stained glass windows and two frescoes in Florentine Renaissance style. A military engineer, Major William Nairn Forbes, designed the cathedral with the assistance of C.K. Robinson, modelling the tower and spire upon the Norwich Cathedral. The tower was rebuilt along the lines of Bell Harry Tower in Canterbury Cathedral following the 1934 Calcutta earthquake. The Bishop’s House across the street is also a very impressive piece of architecture. St. Paul’s was consecrated in 1874. The church is still a major place for beautiful christion marriages in Kolkata. The peaceful atmosphere inside the cathedral bring peace in mind almost instantly. This is truely another treasure Kolkata is proud of, and also a remain of British dominance in pre-independent India.
