Movie (Cinema) Halls in Calcutta (Kolkata) - Address, Phone, Showtime

Calcutta (Kolkata) is truly a big hub of movie goers. Tollywood (Kolkata) has long lost it’s fame brought by Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Soumitra, Satyajit Roy and many many more during the “Black and White” period, yet there are numerous movie halls with increasing number everyday. Also, there are very few movie halls that release “Bengali films” only outnumbered by numerous halls full of Hindi Bollywood releases and some with Hollywood English films.

There are also movie halls that you are probably aware of but you never go. Some of such movie halls will always feature some B grade Hindi or some “adult” useless English films. We are not going to consider them in our small list of movie halls we are preparing.

Well, there are some movie halls which are just famous for it’s rich culture. Such is “Nandan” movie theatre at Rabindra Sadan. Only in downtown Calcutta (Kolkata) there are probably 14 halls withing walking distance - Metro, Globe, New Empire, Roxy, Jyoti, Paradise, and so on. You will always find different small scale food stalls right outside almost any movie halls (Except the new INOX series movie theaters). Most of the halls are in good shape and you will have great time watching movies. There are some loud occasions though when Shahrukh Khan makes a jumps from a building or Bipasa Basu poses for us. Well the noise are usually within the acceptable decibel limit (means we are pretty much used to it). Try to avoid corner seats if you are going with family or you may face some trivial problems we cannot discuss in this article.

Just to let you know how old the Calcutta Movie Industry is, we will use “Metro” cinema as an classic example. The “Metro” Cinema Hall opened in 1935 even before Indian independence. But, the movie hall was built over an older existing cinema hall (we could not track when the earlier structure was first made). Metro Cinema was a project of MGM to promote their films in Calcutta (Kolkata). The MGM continued to operate till 1972 and then it was sold to a local exhibitor. Thomas Lamb made the “deco” style design for the Metro cinema hall.
